I’m going to be completely honest. I was pretty unaware of Sleep Token and their music. The reason we went to this show was for 2 reasons. The first reason was my daughter asked me to go with her. I was a little hesitant because I didn’t know any of their songs but I was willing to consider it. The other reason we decided to go was Jess won tickets from the radio station. When tickets first went on sale or just before they were giving them away every day for a week. Me, Jess, and Lexi tried all week to win, and it wasn’t until the final day that Jess won them. Since the tickets were free and I was going to be able to spend time with Jess and Lexi at a show I was in.
The day of the show, we contemplated going up really early to get a good spot but we figured there were some crazy fans out there and odds were they were all going to beat us no matter what. So, we left later then we first plan but got to the venue about 3pm. After parking and walking up to the line I was surprised to see the line was all the way to the bottom of the stairs. There were clearly 150+ people in front of us. We stood there for a few minutes and then I heard someone yelling at me a little way up the stairs. It was a friend I knew from other shows. He lets us move up and get in line with them. There were still at least 100 people in front of us. Then as we got closer to the doors, they had us break into a few lines and I was able to work my way up much closer to the front. They moved us in stages and each time I was able to get a little closer. When we got to the last spot they has us waiting I was 2nd in line. When they opened the doors, I ran to the GA section but over shot it by 5 rows. By the time I realized it the first 2 rows were taken but we got the 3rd one. We spread out and Jess and Lexi went to get merch. As me and my friend I was with in line were holding the spots some guy and his girlfriend tried to come and take a few of our seats. I told them no we already have these spots. It turned into a little argument and even some of the people around us told him to leave that we had that spot first. Considering what time we got there, we had some amazing seats! Maybe the best I have ever had at Red Rocks.
After getting our merch and some drinks we sat there maybe 20 mins before the first band came on. They were called Empire State Bastards. I had never heard of them before. They were a 3-person band and honestly, I got into their songs and set. They had a heavy screaming style which a thought was good and set the mood for Sleep Token. We didn’t end up watching their full set. Before they ended me, Jess and Lexi went to the bathroom. I got out first and waited for them. As I was standing there I looked over and saw a racoon digging in the trash next to me. He then hopped down and walked right behind me. It happened so fast I tried getting some pictures and only managed to get 2 blurry ones. It was still pretty cool to see! The girls were both bummed when they came out and I told them they missed it.
By the time Sleep Token had come out I was pretty buzzed from the drinks I had. I think I had recognized 2 or 3 of their songs. I had been listening to some of their songs leading up to the show. I was really bummed when they didn’t play Jaws, but I was told they never play that song live. I also don’t think they played Blood Sport another song that grew on me. Despite not really knowing most of the songs they still put on a great set. The singer nor anyone from the band talked, they just played one song after another. I was also told they don’t talk because they are really trying to keep their identities completely secret. I also don’t know how true this is but I was also told the band is into satanic worshiping. Again, not sure if that’s true but they certainly give off that vibe a little. Whether they are or aren’t I do know they were entertaining to watch! I would certainly see them again if I had a chance.
